Managing Bad Checks
Keeping customer information current (particularly addresses, phone numbers, and the dates you called and mailed bad check letters) is vital in Managing Bad Checks. Even more helpful in managing bad checks is after using the Bad Check Maintenance procedure. Retail will alert the cashiers if the customer tries to write another check. When the cashier enters the customer card number for the customer, a message box displays ‘No Check Writing Privileges’ at the checkstand and a manager must be called before the check can be accepted and the sale can be completed. The customers’ checks can also be tracked by their driver’s license. The Front End can prompt the cashier to enter Secondary IDs that have been set up 5FB5.Hin Customer Maintenance, usually the driver’s license, and if a customer has used that ID to write a bad check, the ‘No Check Writing Privileges’ message will be displayed, even if the customer uses a new customer ID or different checking account.
The manager has the option to accept this check by overriding it through the Manager function. However, to minimize loss risk, you should establish a procedure for accepting payment for the bad check plus any service charge before accepting the new check.
The Manager should then:
- Write out a receipt for the customer and enter this information in Edit a Bad Check showing the customer has paid the bad check and the bank charges.
- The manager has the option of marking the Write Checks check0ACBO0 box to allow the customer to write checks again, or leaving the check box blank, requiring that the manager verify the check.
Finally, maintaining the Bad Check information, and keeping it current, will be helpful should you have to resort to legal action to obtain repayment.
